What are some of your favorite podcasts? I know there are hella out there - but what's a podcast theme/subject you think is still missing? (do we REALLY need more true crime...?)

Highly recommend Second Wave, an American story that begins in Vietnam (kuow.org/programs/second-wave). If you're Vietnamese-American, it is relatable as almighty F.
I think it's pretty safe and universally agreed upon that Melissa Arnette Elliott, better known as Missy "Misdemeanor" Elliott, is a damn iconic legend.

Let's analyze the facts:

Missy Elliott The Rain by humblehills

  • Trash bag + bicycle helmet = haute couture? Iconic 10/10.
Missy Elliott Get Ur Freak On by humblehills
  • Cutting edge (y'know, for 2001) CGI technology? Iconic 12/10.
Missy Elliott Kids by humblehills
  • Taking advice from Whitney Houston's "Greatest Love of All" and believing that children ARE the future? (and introducing us to dance legend Alyson Stoner) Iconic 15/10 (honestly, probably more. Alyson has Missy to thank for like 85% of her iMDB credits)
And modern-day Missy is STILL killing it. Proof:

Missy Elliott Puppet by humblehills
  • Missy Elliott as a marionette puppet? Does it scare me a little? Kinda, but is it ICONIC? YASSSSSS 20+++/10.
  • (I will complain on another day that "WTF (Where They From)" should have gotten way more airplay/recognition and y'all basic plebeians need to rethink your choices)
So the purpose of this post is to shine a light on one song in particular that my queen released in 2002 that made little 10-year-old me feel hella seen. You know what it is - "Work It". You know, the one where you put your thing down, flip it, and reverse it (ii esrever dna, ti pilf, nwod gniht ym tup). This section of the song literally shone a light into my little heart and made me feel alive:

"Boys, boys, all type of boys
Black, White, Puerto Rican, Chinese boys"

Our girl, Missy, does not discriminate. Not only is the song about women claiming their sexual agency and being damn proud of it, but it's an appreciation for all men. Yes, even Asian men (I know she references specifically Chinese boys, but ya feel me). Prior to this, Asian men were totally removed from the heterosexual romantic narrative. They were considered weak, emasculated, not sexy. (Let's be hella real - this stereotype still exists TODAY). But Missy was like "hold up 2002, let me tell you how sexy Asian men are!" You might be thinking, "uhmm, Dalena, you were 10 when this song was released. Why the fuck was the sex appeal of Asian men such a pressing issue for you?" Okay...it probably wasn't, but I do distinctly remember thinking it was cool that Missy did a S/O specifically to Asians. I went to a school where being Asian kind of automatically made me feel uncool, and Missy Elliott was very much cool, so to hear someone so iconic and cool mention Asian men in a song felt really fucking groundbreaking.

So moral of the story is this: if you a fly gal, get your nails done. Get a pedicure, get your hair did. (JK, more Missy lyrics...but also, self-care matters so like, you really should). REAL moral of the story: love and appreciate anyone and everyone: Black, White, Puerto Rican, AND Chinese boys.

Glasses v. Contacts
My best friend, Natalie, is a community organizer, activist, and doodler. I asked her if she can make a doodle of me, and she did so v quickly, but then my idiot self got my hair cut, so she graciously re-drew the doodle of me AGAIN (with glasses on/off options!).

She created this doodle on her iPad using Procreate. Check out her work here: www.instagram.com/nataliepbui/

I really need to stop changing my hairstyles so often.
